I'm Not Familiar With Baseball
Can somebody look at this box score and tell me why David Wells got the win Monday night? (P.S. Not that I'm complaining.)

What was the logic behind signing a 40+ year old pitcher with bad conditioning to a 2 year contract? That's a serious question, I won't even bring up the Red Sox not re-signing Pedro.

Wells pitched the minimum of five innings at which point Boston was winning 9-4. The Sox relievers were awful! They looked more like what we're used to from the Rangers' middle relief.
For Matt, I think Wells was a bit of a bargain signing as well as a bit of a desperation signing. The Sox knew that they were going to miss out on Carl Pavano and lose Pedro Martinez. Wells is a lefty which apparently can excuse anything short of cruelty to animals in the baseball world.
I'm not going to say the decision was a great one, but I think it was a bit of a desperate move to fill a rotation spot with a lefty.
The signing I didn't get is Wade Miller. I don't know what's holding his arm to his shoulder, but I'm pretty certain it's nothing more than a threadbare ligament. He's had shoulder problems and missed significant time each season for the last three. His repetoire in Houston was as a power pitcher. A power pitcher with consistent shoulder problems is a ticking time bomb.
